Ruling on ASB/ASN Investments

Official explanation on the harus status of ASB/ASN investments, with fatwa references and curated media resources.

Harus Fatwa

The national fatwa council and the state fatwa councils pronounce that the unit trust funds managed by PNB and its dividends/bonuses are Harus.

Ijtihad is used by the councils to determine the Shariah pronouncement.

The confusion should not arise because the Shariah pronouncement is issued by the nation's independent, recognised and authoritative bodies in matters pertaining to Islamic law.

The Harus ruling is based on the principles of Maqasid al-Shariah.

Hifz Al-Mal (the economic strength of the Muslims) is a concern (dharuriyyah) to be considered as the economic position of Muslims in the country needs to be strengthened.

PNB/ASNB plays an important role to improve the Bumiputera community socio-economic position, especially the Muslims in this country through its equity control in the strategic and core companies.

PNB/ASNB does not invest in prohibited sectors which are 'haram' such as alcohol and gambling.

PNB/ASNB has an experienced Shariah Advisory Committee which provides counsel on matters pertaining to Islamic law.
